Plan changes
You can change the plan. The coach makes sure that the change does not break it.
It is easy to suggest a change. The coach applies changes only at set times.
Four types of change
| Type | Example | When to apply |
|---|---|---|
| tweak | Use a different resource. Drop a stretch item. | Any day |
| swap | Replace a day or topic | Weekly review |
| replan | Add a new block or deliverable. Make the plan longer or shorter. | Checkpoints |
| goal | Change the goal | Checkpoints, after a wait (default 7 days) |
You can change these times in STUDY.md.
When you find something new
For example: a paper, a job post, or a course. The coach asks two questions:
- Does it help the goal?
- Does it help the deliverable for this week?
Then it puts the item in one of three places:
- Helps this week: apply it now as a tweak.
- Helps the goal, not this week: add it to
proposals.md. Decide at the next review. - Does not help the goal: put it in the parking lot, with a date to look at it again.
The coach tells you where the item went in one line. You then go back to your block.
How the coach applies a change
- If you add work, you must remove work of the same size.
- The change applies from today or later. Past days do not change.
- The coach edits the plan and the day files.
- It adds a line to
changes.md: date, type, change, reason, cost. - It shows the new pace.
- For a replan or goal change, it shows the edits and asks you first.
Warnings
- Too many swaps in one week, or 2 goal changes in 30 days: the coach tells you. It asks if the plan is wrong, or if new things pull you away.
- Behind on the deliverable: finish it first. A scope cut is better than a swap.
When the coach suggests a change
- Two or more days were much harder or easier than planned.
- Your weekly hours or your goal changed.
- A check found a missing basic concept.
- You missed too many days in a row.
- A checkpoint day arrived.
